Debt collection agency letter explained in English
Debt collector. A company that collects debts for others, or that bought an old loan or bill. Check that the debt is yours and the amount is right.
Letters you may get
- Notice that your loan or debt was sold — a new company now collects it
- Demand for payment — pay or agree a plan
- Letter before action — they plan to go to court
What to do
- Ask for proof if you don’t recognise the debt: the agreement and a statement of the account.
- Most debts can’t be taken to court after 6 years without payment or written acknowledgement. Get advice before paying an old debt.
- Find the deadline. Look for “by”, “within”, “no later than”.
- Write the reference number from the letter on everything you send back, and keep copies.
- If you disagree with a decision, object in writing before the deadline (“review”, “appeal”, “dispute”, “objection”). See the template.
Questions
What is the Debt collection agency?
Debt collector. A company that collects debts for others, or that bought an old loan or bill. Check that the debt is yours and the amount is right.
How long do I have to answer a letter from the Debt collection agency?
It depends on the letter. Look for words like “by”, “within”, “no later than” — they mark the deadline. In Ireland, many deadlines count from the date printed on the letter. When a deadline counts from when you received it, Briefly adds about 2 days for post — check the envelope or postmark if you are close to the deadline. To object, the letter usually names the way to do it (“review”, “appeal”, “dispute”, “objection”).
